This chapter specifically was showing he loved her even way before she died (by showing their interactions over small things like her tripping etc.), but he’d done so many terrible things to her that not even Hell would have a place to accept him. Yes, he loved her, but it isn’t pure. Yes, there were times (although very little) where he cared for her genuinely, but most of the time he loved the thought of her loving him and that isn’t right. If he seriously, truly, and unconditionally loved her, in their current life he would have let her go. If he was so sorry about all the things he’d done to her and regretted it, he would let her be happy without him. He doesn’t understand the amount of pain and suffering she went through, all he thinks about is how much HE suffered after her death and how much HE regretted things. It’s always he, he, he, and not her, her, her. It has never been about her. Just him.
